Children as young as nine could be jailed in the Philippines for certain crimes under a proposed law that aims to lower the minimum age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 9 years old.
Not only is it a violation of children’s rights, it also ignores scientific facts on the effects of incarceration to children and how globally, it has been seen that putting children in jails does not solve criminality! By lowering the minimum age of criminal responsibility, we are failing our children.
Last February 13, children under Stairway Foundation and students from the Singapore American School joined in the movement to oppose HB 002 (lowering MACR) by participating in a noise barrage against lowering the minimum age of criminal responsibility. #ChildrenNotCriminals#IngayNaminBuhayNgBata #BreakTheSilence
