Walking through the gates of Stairway Foundation, Inc. (SFI), we expected nothing more than a routine work immersion connecting school to future jobs. Instead, the experience sparked growth—in mind, body, and spirit.
A Holistic View of Advocacy
Our experience diverged completely from a typical desk job. Instead of following a routine, SFI immersed us in the heart of their mission, allowing us to see firsthand what child protection and community development truly mean. Rather than just observing, we took part in the work ourselves:
- The Community Assistance Program: Watching the “Educational Assistance Initiative” in action showed us how much teamwork it takes to help a student keep reaching for their dreams.
- The Family Home Program: This part of our stay changed us the most. Joining the “wrap-up” sessions taught us that Stairway Foundation is not just about giving shelter to underprivileged children but also about healing and building connections.
- Whether we helped the Admin and Finance Unit or worked with the Kitchen team, we saw how every job, even behind the scenes, supports the foundation’s mission. These experiences showed how everyone’s work strengthens the community.
Lessons in Vulnerability and Connection
Looking back on our time here, the most important lesson wasn’t a technical skill, but a human one. In school, we learn to be efficient, but at Stairway, we discovered that it’s okay to show vulnerability.
By spending time with the staff and children, we learned how powerful it is to share our feelings. We came expecting a scholarship-focused place, but found emotional growth and inclusion. The SFI family welcomed us as fellow advocates in meals, work, and every aspect of daily life.
A Renewed Perspective
The 80 hours passed quickly, but the lessons will last. This experience connected our classroom learning with real life and brought us closer to the community. We now better understand its needs, have more practical skills, and feel more connected to those we helped.
- We learned adaptability—shifting easily from office work to active roles in the community showed us how important flexibility is in making a real impact.
- We discovered how building genuine relationships with mentors strengthens our professional network and supports our growth.
- We developed self-awareness—by reflecting on our experiences, we better understood ourselves and grew more grateful for what we have.
As we leave Stairway, we do so transformed, not just as students who completed a requirement but as advocates equipped with confidence, compassion, and real-world skills. The lessons learned, relationships built, and values gained here have profoundly shaped us. Wherever we go next, we will honor the spirit of Stairway by championing change and uplifting others, carrying forward the impact of this unforgettable journey.
